The year after I graduated from college, I moved into a Chevy 1500 cargo van with some pots and pans, a sleeping bag, and a pair of microphones. My aim was to travel the country and record the sounds I encountered for use in new electroacoustic chamber music and multimedia pieces. While electronics are often used to expand the powers of conventional instruments or to create entirely new sounds, my idea was to use technology to include sounds and sights not usually associated with music (like an oil change station in Industry or a highway bridge in NJTransit to Coney Island) as organic members of the band. Three years after selling the van, I premiered The Secret History, the 53-minute final product of that original idea. Ride EP is a shorter DVD collection of The Secret History's best and least copyright-infinging parts.
